Just ask your Vet these questions when you see him.

Puppies grow. Puppies gain weight. Tiny Chi’s pee a lot because they have tiny bladders.

Although excessive drinking and urination are the most common symptoms, they are in no way the only ones. In addition to the weight loss, dogs can also develop signs of poor skin and hair coat, liver disease, vomiting, weakness in the rear legs (diabetic neuropathy), secondary bacterial infections and dehydration. They can also develop a life threatening condition known as ketoacidosis. A dog whose diabetes is not regulated will often become blind or have kidney problems develop as well. I can remember several dogs that the owners never kept up with the treatments to control the diabetes and the dog would quickly go blind.

What you are seeing is most likely just the fact he’s young and doesn’t have full control of his bladder yet. Puppies are thirsty peers!

However, just to be safe, check with your vet when you see him on Saturday. Checking his urine is one way they would check…they might find sugar in his urine. And a blood test would also check for high blood sugar. But your puppy, being so young may not even notice the blood draw if it is necessary.

At this stage I don’t think that there are any signs of diabetes. Puppies eat and drink a lot when they are babies. They also gain a LOT OF WEIGHT. As a caring dog owner, you will love him and worry about him throughout his life. Just face the facts, if you care you will worry about him. Hopefully he will have a long long life. Join the club, I have had dogs for over forty years and I still worry.

10 weeks is extremely young for a dog to develop diabetes. And while the excessive water drinking and peeing is a symptom of diabetes, the weight gain is a sign that it isn’t diabetes. Dogs with undiagnosed diabetes lose weight.

But since you’re concerned and because he is going to the vet, collect a urine sample to bring with you (catch his urine in a cup).
